Around the world, governments wrestle with legitimacy, citizens push back, and institutions strain under mounting expectations. The following three stories one from Nigeria, one from Guinea, another from Sudan share a common thread: leadership under pressure, civic discontent, and shifting power dynamics. Each reveals how fragile stability can be when institutions are tested and the public demands accountability.

Nigeria is facing widespread disruption after the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) launched a nationwide strike in response to the dismissal of over 800 workers by the Dangote Oil Refinery. The workers say they were fired for attempting to unionize, while the refinery contends the move was necessary amid staff reorganization and allegations of sabotage.
The strike has shuttered several key state and regulatory institutions, including operations at NNPC Limited, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). Despite attempts by the government to mediate, PENGASSAN remains steadfast, saying the court order to block crude and gas supply disruptions was never formally served.
In response, the government has set up talks with union leaders, describing the situation as urgent given the critical role of oil in Nigeria’s revenue structure. Meanwhile, the refinery has defended its actions, labeling the strike illegal and arguing the firings were essential to preserve operational integrity.
The standoff raises questions about labor rights, corporate accountability, and the resilience of Nigeria’s energy sector. The outcome of the talks will be closely watched, especially by investors worried about stability in one of Africa’s biggest oil producers.

Guinea has announced that it will hold its first presidential election since the 2021 coup on December 28, 2025, according to a state television decree. This comes after the Supreme Court validated a referendum that approved a new constitution, which now permits coup leaders to contest.
The new constitution approved with 89% “yes” votes in a referendum with 92% reported turnout extends the presidential term from five to seven years and introduces a Senate. Critics, however, question the legitimacy of the turnout and warn the revision is tailored to benefit the military junta.
Opposition parties argue the electoral re-design violates previous transitional agreements with ECOWAS, especially since the new rules allow coup actors to run for office. The missed 2024 election deadline has already drawn regional rebuke.
The stakes are high. Guinea holds vast mineral wealth, including significant bauxite and iron ore reserves, making political control here as much about resource governance as popular mandate. The international community will closely monitor whether the vote is free, fair, and credible.

Sudan’s long-running civil conflict has intensified dramatically with the reported deployment of high-end armaments: surface-to-air missile systems and attack drones have appeared on frontlines, dramatically raising the stakes in a war already devastating to civilians.
Investigations tied to visual confirmation and arms tracking suggest that paramilitary forces (RSF) now have access to Chinese FK-2000 systems, as well as drones similar to those used by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Some of this weaponry is believed to have been routed via countries including the UAE, Turkey, Iran, and Bulgaria.
The use of these advanced tools is already disrupting humanitarian operations and civilian mobility. Airspace security has been compromised, and noncombatants are increasingly vulnerable to drone strikes and missile attacks.
Experts warn that unchecked escalation will worsen displacement, famine, and regional instability. The proliferation of these weapons risks further widening the conflict’s footprint across the Sahel and East Africa.
